Skiing is one of the sports children pick up the fastest: they aren’t afraid of falling, their balance is good, and they learn through play. Still, starting at the right age and with the right approach is important if you want your child to love skiing.
Why age 5?
At our school, the age we recommend for starting to ski is 5. Children this age usually:
- can follow an instructor’s short, simple instructions,
- have enough leg strength to handle the weight of ski boots,
- have an attention span long enough for real learning.
Younger children can also get to know the snow through play; at that stage, though, the goal is less about learning technique and more about learning to love the snow and the equipment.
What we focus on in the first lessons
- Short, playful segments: Kids learn by imitating and playing rather than through long explanations.
- Warming up and breaks: A child who is cold or hungry can’t learn; breaks are part of the lesson.
- Safety: A helmet is a must for every child.
- A sense of achievement: Even being able to stop with a snowplow on the first day is a big win.
Tips for parents
- Make sure your child’s clothing is waterproof and comfortable, and bring spare gloves and socks.
- Watch the lesson from a distance; children can get distracted more easily when a parent is close by.
- After the lesson, ask them to show you what they’ve learned; it boosts their motivation.
