Ski Equipment: Should You Rent or Buy?

One of the first questions that comes up when you start skiing is equipment: should you buy everything, or is renting enough? The answer depends on how often you ski and what level you’re at.

The advantages of renting

  • Equipment that matches your level: Softer, shorter skis make learning easier for beginners. As your level improves, you can change your equipment too.
  • Well-maintained equipment: Edge and base maintenance on rental gear is taken care of for you.
  • No hassle carrying or storing it: Your equipment is waiting for you at the slopes.
  • Ideal for kids: There’s no need to buy new boots every year for feet that grow every season.

When should you buy?

If you ski several times each season and have reached an intermediate level, you can start thinking about your own equipment. Our advice is to start with boots: a boot that fits your foot perfectly is the piece that affects both comfort and control the most. As for skis, you can keep renting for a while and try out different models.

What to watch for when renting

  • Give your correct boot size, height and weight; your bindings are adjusted based on these.
  • Walk around for a few minutes after putting on the boots; your toes should lightly touch the front, and your heel shouldn’t lift.
  • Be honest about your level; a beginner who says “advanced” may end up with skis that are hard to handle.
